Mulching

In agriculture and gardening mulching means covering the soil with fresh organic material. Unlike mowing, with mulching the crop (e.g. grass) is shredded much more and remains on the mowed area. Increased shredding ensures that the crop decomposition process is accelerated. Then the fresh grass can grow through the clipping more quickly. Mulching also improves the nutrient supply in the soil, because it is a natural fertilizer. Another advantage is that it is no longer necessary to dispose of the clippings. High quality mulching mowers are characterized by powerful shredding and an even distribution of clippings. Economically seen, mulching a good lawn maintenance measure. However, as with all activities and measures in agriculture and horticulture a certain amount of expertise is required, even when mulching. The length of the clippings, the frequency of mulch mowing and the mulch distribution must also be considered. A layer of mulch that is too thick can cover the ground completely and prevent the evaporation of rainwater. The sunlight can also be too highly shielded and the oxygen supply affected. So, know-how and good equipment are also the way to success for mulching.
