Mulching

In agriculture and gardening mulching means covering the soil with fresh organic material. Unlike mowing, with mulching the crop (e.g. grass) is shredded much more and remains on the mowed area. Increased shredding ensures that the crop decomposition process is accelerated. Then the fresh grass can grow through the clipping more quickly.
